| Lot #2266 POLAND Russian Stamps used in Poland 1866 10k brown and blue, tied by "1" in four squares (type III) on cover used in 1871 from Warszawa (departure pmks in Cyrillic only on back) to Smogorzew, via Przysucha (Radom gouv), bearing two-line arrival datestamp in Cyrillic "Przisuskaya Sta(ncya) dna 12 June, 1871" (rare). After 1865, in the process of the generalized and intensified Russification of the Kingdom of Poland, the last Polish and bilingual cancellations were removed from the post offices. Under the pretext of non-availability, St. Petersburg supplied most of the postal agencies with the provincial two-line datestamps in Cyrillic letters, identical to those used in Russia proper

On back, there are two wax seals, one reading "Warsaw Postamt Exp. Letters Abroad", with red departure and framed "Rekomendowany", also "Franco", with "10" in crayon, boxed Wien (27/3) arrival pmk on back, fine. According to regulations, Polish cancels were valid until 1864; replaced by Cyrillic thereafter, hence this letter with markings in Polish only is rarity

| Lot #2275 POLAND Russian Stamps used in Poland 1899 (27 Dec) cover to Dresden, franked with a German 10 Pfennig adhesive, tied by "Warszawa 1 Eksped" departure in Cyrillic letters, another "Warszawa 4 Exped" alongside, with a transit pmk on back, arriving in Dresden on 9th January, 1890. While there is no explanation for a German stamp used in Warszawa, several possibilities arise. In 1889, new types of Russian definitives (4k, 10k, 20k and 1r) were introduced for foreign correspondence. In addition, new postal rates went into effect. The rate for a 15gr letter abroad was increased from 7k to 10k. An inexperienced postal clerk may have confused a 10pf German adhesive for a 10k Russian stamp on a letter which in fact passed unchallenged through two post offices and arrived safely in Germany.
